Desmond Jumbam

Bio

Desmond Jumbam is a global surgery research and health systems consultant. Currently, he serves as Director of Health Policy and Advocacy at Operation Smile, an international non-governmental organization that aims to improve access to safe and timely surgical care globally. Desmond is also a 2022 News Voices Fellow at the Aspen Institute and the president and co-founder of the Jumbam Family Foundation, based in Cameroon. The Jumbam Family Foundation aims to provide psychosocial and reintegration support to victims of the ongoing Anglophone war in Cameroon. Desmond serves on the editorial boards of BMC Health Services Research, PLOS Global Public Health, and Frontiers. He is a board member of King’s Global Health Partnership at King’s College London.

Education

Desmond Jumbam earned his bachelor's degree in biological sciences with a minor in chemistry from Taylor University (magna cum laude) in 2015 and a master of science in global health from the University of Notre Dame in 2016. His master's dissertation was entitled Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) assessment of malaria interventions in Zambia and was published in BMC Public Health. He is currently pursuing a Master's of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Notre Dame. 

Employment

Desmond Jumbam is the Director of Health Policy and Advocacy at Operation Smile. In this capacity, he leads and advises on research and advocacy initiatives that aim to increase the prioritization and funding for surgical care in government policies in low- and middle-income countries. Prior to joining Operation Smile, Desmond was a health policy analyst in the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change at Harvard Medical School, conducting global surgery research and advising Ministries of Health on the development of National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plans. His research interests include global surgery, health financing, health systems strengthening, and decolonizing global health. Desmond is a New Voices Fellow at the Aspen Institute and a board member of King's Global Health Partnership.
